Monkey2 on Patreon

Monkey2 is the ‘next’ language Mark Sibly is working on. I just write about it in a previous post.

The ‘strange’ (for me!) thing is the ‘payment method’.

With Blitz3d, BlitzMax and MonkeyX you  pay a license. Once. No other money needed. No annual fee. Nothing. Nada. Niente!

From a consumer point of view this is a great thing. Costs are known, no matter with monthly/annual fee for licence and so on.

Some months ago Mark stated about the financial problem due the low selling level of MonkeyX language.

One solution offered by the community was to ‘remodulate’ the cost of the license, adding annual fee or just set a price for each modules.

No answer, as usual 😛

Indeed, with MonkeyX2 (I don’t really like the name, tbh) Mark decided to release it as free and opensource.

I say just one thing: none offer you the food or the loan for your house for free. This is the real world. No matter what do you think about it.

BUT Mark posted an interesting alternative: patreon support.

The italian translation of ‘patron’ is not right in this context. The other synonimus is ‘maeceans’ (mecenate in italian) and the meaning is quite clear!

Like in the Risorgimento era, some poeple just pay a monthly fee to artist (like Raffaello, Leonardo and so on) to create and continue the various works.

In 2015 this is a really great and original idea.

I just subscribed for a (very low, sorry ! but my finances are not so high :D) monthly fee. You can see in the link posted above how many are the ‘patreons’ and the sum collected monthly.

I must admit I’m very happy to ‘pay’ to support Mark, not for the new incoming language (I really don’t know how it will be and if it will satisfy my needs!) but just for the products I got (and paid) and use everyday (in this case BlitzMax+MaxGUI): from my point of view Bmax is a life and time saver. No doubt. I will pay 10x the license cost!

In any case, I wish the best results (morally and economically) to Mark and his new creation.

Ps: I’m still waiting for a GAME created directly from Mark… maybe in the future!
